They Called Us Heroes

They Called Us Heroes

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we started documenting the stories and experiences of Ontario’s healthcare workers and the injustices they have faced from the Ontario government and for-profit healthcare employers.

In March, we officially launched “They Called Us Heroes,” our 60-minute documentary that gives these workers a platform to share their struggles – short staffing, low wages, isolation from their families, unimaginable loss, burnout, and so much more.

A very special thank you to all the members and healthcare workers who opened their doors, hearts and souls to us to tell their difficult stories.

We feel strongly that politicians need to understand the issues healthcare workers faced during the pandemic and are still facing daily. In May, SEIU Healthcare leadership and members went to Ottawa for an event hosted by Senator Yussuf and MPs Matthew Green and Michael Coteau, showing a teaser of our documentary and providing a chance for our members to speak one-on-one with MPs about their experiences.
