Workplace Organizer Program
Our commitment to you always prioritizes innovation and member engagement, increases our workplace visibility, and empowers our membership through advocacy and engagement. The Workplace Organizer Program was a huge success in 2023 as members involved in the program felt empowered.
We can only win our fight to end Ford’s anti-worker, anti-patient privatization plan together. SEIU Healthcare’s coalition with OCHU/CUPE, ONA, OPSEU and Unifor means we can do even more to fight Bill 60. This year, our five healthcare unions organized rallies from Toronto to Thunder Bay, calling on hospital CEOs across Ontario to demand they join us in saying NO to privatization.
We will continue to work together to protect our public healthcare system, improve wages and working conditions for workers, and improve patient outcomes.
March ONA Rally
SEIU Healthcare Nursing Division President Jackie Walker and many SEIU Nurses joined the Ontario Nurses’ Association All-Out Shut Down Protest in downtown Toronto today to demand better staffing, wages, and care for all healthcare professionals.
Jackie also spoke about SEIU Healthcare’s #DriveFor35 initiative that would bring a $35 minimum wage for RPNs to Ontario.
This year, instead of working with our union to get a fair deal for members, management at Yee Hong ignored what was best for staff and residents.
Members picketed outside Scarborough Finch, Markham, McNicoll and Mississauga locations in response. Instead of hearing us out, Yee Hong management attempted to intimidate and prevent us from speaking out.
Members at Schlegel Homes across Ontario have remained relentless in the fight to get a fair contract from their employer. Over 100 members attended Schlegel rallies across all Schlegel Homes in Ontario, and thousands more joined us by signing our letter to the president and CEO of Schlegel Healthcare.

SEIU members at Presentation Manor rally for better care for their residents. Staff shortage, low wages, and unsafe working conditions were pain points for our members. The union took a stand against management at Presentation Manor to grant them a seat at the table and listen to their wants. Better care for residents means better care for workers at Presentation Manor.
Chatham Kent Paramedics on Strike
This summer, Chatham Kent Paramedics voted 97% to go on strike. These lifesavers went on strike because their employer, Medavie, refused to give them the collective agreement needed to keep servicing the community at the highest level.
The strike lasted five weeks, and now our union is in arbitration with Medavie.
Raising Voices and Standards: Hundreds of Sunnybrook Environmental Services Workers Unite for Higher Wages
In a display of worker action and solidarity, Environmental Service (EVS) workers and SEIU Healthcare members at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre came together to present a petition for better wages to management.
The petition, signed by over 215 EVS staff, was presented to management on September 15, 2023. Their demand for higher wages stems from their belief that their role is essential to quality care and that their pay should reflect the level of responsibility and dedication they bring to the job.
These members set an example of how union power can help workers fight for what they deserve.
Save Minden ER Rally
On August 26, 2023, SEIU co-sponsored a “Save Minden ER” event in solidarity with members of the Minden community. The Minden ER is one of many Emergency Rooms that closed in 2023. Members of this community must now travel to Haliburton to get help in emergencies.

Saving Public Healthcare – Ontario Health Coalition Rallies
On September 25, SEIU Healthcare members and staff joined thousands of healthcare workers at Queen’s Park today to rally against Doug Ford’s healthcare privatization plan.
In October, SEIU Healthcare Executive Vice President Mina Amrith joined our members at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Thunder Bay to continue our fight against Doug Ford’s privatization plan. We presented our petition to St. Joseph’s president and CEO, Janine Black, calling on her to stop the expansion of privatization at the hospital immediately.
Workers at Brookside Court Demand Better Wages and Working Conditions
This demonstrates what happens when workers take action and send a message to management. Instead of waiting until arbitration in August 2024, Brookside Court came to the table with an offer, and members voted to ratify.
