Keep Healthcare Accessible For All Campaign

Keep Healthcare Accessible For All Campaign

We launched SEIU Power Surge this year – our first-ever political action committee.

SEIU PAC leaders and members across Ontario took charge and engaged with their communities about the threats of Doug Ford’s privatization plans for Ontario. Through training, members were empowered to canvas their communities, engage the public at local events, share their stories, and deliver crucial education about the current challenges of our healthcare system.

Thanks to everyone involved, we’ve collected almost 4,500 signatures for our Keep Healthcare Accessible campaign. Through this campaign, we continue educating the public on the need to keep our healthcare system public and fight against Doug Ford’s dangerous privatization plans.

Leadership Academy

Leadership Academy

Our Leadership Academy is a member-led, Ontario-wide program to leverage member power and community influence over government decisions.

Throughout March and April of this year, members in more than 30 locations across the province learned how healthcare workers play an important role in saving Ontario’s public healthcare system and how they could play their part in advocating for better working conditions, such as safe staffing levels and increased wages.

We hosted more Leadership Academy sessions than we ever have before! Members canvassed in their communities, told their stories and collected signatures for our Keep Healthcare Accessible campaign.

In 2023, We were in 30 cities across the province, from Ajax, Barrie, Brampton, Brantford, Chatham, Cobourg, Collingwood, Etobicoke, Hamilton, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Kingston, Kirkland Lake, Leamington, London, Mississauga, Niagara Falls, North Bay, North York, Orilla, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Peterborough, Pickering, Richmond Hill, Sarnia, Scarborough, St. Catherines, Thunder Bay, Toronto.

Leadership Assembly

Leadership Assembly

To continue our political activism from the Leadership Academy sessions, we invited all participants to join us for two full days of political action and education.

As part of the assembly, we heard report-backs from our members across the province, planned summer actions, and hit the streets once again for door-to-door canvassing about the importance of saving our public healthcare system.

We were also visited by four candidates in the Toronto mayoral race, including the eventual Mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow, who talked about their platforms and took questions from our members.

Summer Actions

Summer Actions

Using plans created at the Leadership Assembly, SEIU Healthcare members in more than 30 locations went public with our Keep Healthcare Accessible For All Campaign.

From local barbeques, picnics and Rib Fests to labour day parades to major events like the CNE, our members were out and about signing people up for our action group.

Thousands of signatures were collected, growing our database as we fight against Doug Ford’s privatization plan.

Lobby Day – Queen’s Park

Lobby Day – Queen’s Park

In October, we took our stories and struggles to Queen’s Park to educate MPPs and demand action for Ontario healthcare workers.

As a union, we lobby because we want elected officials to understand and actively support our policy goals that help workers. We can influence elected officials, help them understand how policy decisions affect us, and influence them to do what we want.
